47% OF VOTERS SAY BRITAIN NEEDS TO PULL OUT OF THE EU

                 

NEARLY half of British voters want the country to quit the European Union, a shock opinion poll revealed last night. A YouGov survey found that 47 per cent of adults would vote in favour of the UK withdrawing from the EU if a referendum on the issue were held. Only a third of those quizzed for the poll said they would vote for Britain to remain within the 27-nation group.

              

Last night, Eurosceptics seized on the poll as evidence of growing disenchantment with Britain’s EU membership. Paul Nuttall, chairman of the UK Independence Party, said: “These poll results just tell us what anybody with eyes to see or ears to hear has known for ages, the people want out of the EU. Britain needs a referendum on continued EU membership, not some makeweight promise from the Government. The fact that in every part of the country there is a majority for leaving says it all.”

                 

The YouGov poll showed that a majority of voters aged over 40 want Britain to quit the EU.  

• 52% of voters aged between 40 and 59 backed withdrawal, and among the over-60s the figure rose to 57%.

• 63% of Tory voters wanted Britain to quit the EU, with 37% of Labour voters in favour of the move. 

• 33% of the Lib Dem supporters quizzed said they would vote against EU membership in a referendum.

The poll result was published last night as ministers released details of a proposed new “referendum lock” law which is designed to stop any further power being handed over to Brussels. The aim is to prevent a repeat of the Lisbon Treaty fiasco which saw Gordon Brown give the EU sweeping powers to meddle in UK affairs but last night Euro-sceptics critics were quick to brand the measure “worthless”. Senior Tory backbencher Douglas Carswell said: “This ‘lock’ is worthless and ministers must know it, under the Lisbon Treaty the EU doesn’t need any more treaties to give itself more powers.”

Number Of Immigrants Living In The UK Long-Term SOARS By 20%

The number of immigrants choosing to live in the UK long-term soared by more than 20 per cent last year, official figures today show. Net migration increased by 33,000 to 196,000, from 163,000 in 2008, putting increasing pressure on the country's infrastructure. And although four per cent fewer people arrived in the UK last year - 567,000 compared with 590,000 in 2008 - the number leaving fell by 13 per cent, according to the Office for National Statistics. Figures also revealed a quarter of births in the UK last year were to mothers born outside the UK.
            

                   
The statistics were released on the day it was revealed that England is now the most overcrowded country of the 27 in the European Union. 

              

It has more people per square mile than the Low Countries, which has long been the most densely populated region of the continent, MPs have been told.  

                       

Only tiny Malta, an island city state with a population no bigger than that of Bristol, has greater population pressure in Europe.

               

Today's ONS statistics show a 37 per cent rise in immigrants granted settlement in the UK between June 2009 and June 2010, and the number of visas issued to students increased 35 per cent to more than 362,000.

IMMIGRATION SOARS 20% AFTER LABOUR'S "CRACKDOWN"

Labour's supposedly tough points-based immigration system actually led to huge increases in foreign workers and students cleared to live in Britain, it emerged last night. Experts said the new Government had a 'mountain to climb' to bring migration under control.

Labour ministers, led by Gordon Brown, repeatedly claimed the Australian-style points system for non-EU nationals would reduce immigration. Economic migration was expected to fall by as much as 12 per cent. But analysis published last night showed that, in fact, it increased by 20 per cent - while the number of foreign students went up by more than 30 per cent.

Sir Andrew Green, of Migrationwatch-which produced the study, said: 'This is Labour's guilty secret. 'When they talked about immigration at all before and during the election campaign, they claimed that they were getting it under control with their tough new system. The truth was quite different.  

'They have left an immigration system in chaos and the coalition with a huge mountain to climb in order to fulfil David Cameron's election promise that net immigration would be brought down from the present level to tens of thousands, as in the 1980s and early 1990s.' 

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics last week showed net immigration had increased the total population by 142,000 last year. Migrationwatch said Labour ministers had been asked parliamentary questions on the effects of the points system but had not given answers ahead of the election.

However, analysis of fresh government figures shows that the number of non-EU migrants given work permits, or permission to carry on working in Britain, increased by 20 per cent, from 159,535 in 2007 - the year before points were introduced - to 190,640 last year. The total includes dependents.

For students, which came under the points system a year later in 2008, the number of approvals increased by 31 per cent from 208,800 that year to 273,445 a year later.

In 2008, Phil Woolas said that 'had we introduced the points-based system a year ago there would be 12 per cent less migratory workers in the country than there are now'. During the election campaign, Gordon Brown said: 'I think we have got to show people that we are taking tough action and the points-based system we have introduced is changing things. I hope that voters understand that we have got a very tough attitude on this.' 

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics last week showed that more than half the 503,000 immigrants who arrived in the year to last September - 270,000 people - were from outside the EU. At the same time, the number of foreign nationals given British citizenship rose above 200,000 in 2009 - up more than 50 per cent in 12 months.

The third and, thankfully, final Leaders' Debate is supposed to be on the economy but, knowing the BBC and their resident Lefty, Dumblebore, they will also be doing their damnedest to make sure their man, Gordoom, gets the best crack of the whip!

So..... will the unelected, Mono-Eyed Fuckwit finally stop "shaking all over" and hang on in there with the far more polished performances of Smeggy and Davey Boy?

2nd LEADERS' DEBATE SUMMARY

   
Having already vented my spleen on the live blog tonight, folks, this sketch by Quentin Letts sums it all up much better that I could at the moment.....

AGGRO, THRUSTS, PALPABLE HITS AND ONE OR TWO MOMENTS OF HIGH COMEDY

Fight! Fight! Well, that one was much more fun than the first leaders’ debate. Aggro, thrusts, parries, palpable hits and one or two moments of high comedy. 

Gordon Brown, his fringe stiff with hairspray, kept smiling like Jeff Tracey from Thunderbirds. Nick Clegg developed a case of the sweaty Bettys. Mop wallah! Quick! Swab down that man.

David Cameron again frowned rather a lot, though he did remember to point his poached-egg eyes directly at the camera lens.

I can’t really say that I thought Messrs Brown and Cameron did much better this time because I thought they did pretty well last week. Shows how much I know. But the energy level was higher last night. Mr Cameron did less of the calm statesman act and tore into his opponents. Attaboy.

There was more butting in - Mr Clegg’s voice repeatedly barging Broon out of the way. Poor Gordon. He was too polite. Most unlike him!

There was a goodish bust-up about some Labour leaflets which allege that the Tories would get rid of fuel allowances and free telly licences for the elderly. 'Pure and simple lies,' growled Mr Cameron. He told Mr Brown he 'should be ashamed'. Mr Brown laughed.

This time Mr Clegg was the glistening piggy in the middle. Mr Brown, owing to his squiffy eye, was again allowed to stand stage left. The trouble with the middle position is that, like a tennis spectator, you have to look from side to side to watch your neighbours. This can lend the person a shifty aspect. Mr Clegg solved this problem by scribbling notes at his lectern.

Security was much heavier than last week. Bristolians thronged around the docks and police were out in force. A good night for the burglars of south Gloucestershire. Fathers For Justice graced us with their presence and an anti-war group yelled abuse when Mr Brown arrived. On arrival, we were greeted By a recording of jungle drums. You could almost sense Red Indians on the brow of the distant Cotswolds.

Two wags. Sarah Brown was doing her Nurse Ratchet routine - is that a syringe of sedative in her handbag? - and Mrs Cameron did the willowy fashion babe turn. In the absence of Mrs Clegg we had to make do with Paddy Ashdown, squinting like a chap with constipation.

'I’m yer man,' said Mr Brown at the start. Wasn’t there a Leonard Cohen song called that?

At times the whole thing felt less like an exercise in democratic accountability than an advert for Sky News. Branding everywhere. Our compere for the evening, Adam Boulton, sat at a table and held a Sky News cue card like Cilla Black on 'Blind Date'.

Peter Mandelson was nowhere to be seen. Peter! I missed your sensitive steers. In his place we had a Labour spin operation led by boy scout David Miliband. That sensitive flower Charlie Whelan, the trade unions’ hit man, was also on the premises, chewing wasps.

The questions were more interesting. Some man asked about the Pope’s forthcoming visit. Mr Clegg piously told us that he was 'not a man of faith' and then told Catholics they should show 'greater repentance' about the child abuse scandals. This was the one moment in the evening when I nearly threw something at the screen. Ruddy man. If you’re godless, Cleggy, spare us the pulpit talk.

An old dear called Grace asked about pensions. 'Women, and you are one of them,' said Mr Brown in his answer. Hoots of delight in the press room. We also all enjoyed the moment he compared the arguing Cameron and Clegg to his two wee boys at bathtime.

Mr Clegg cited President Obama at one point. I wonder if Mr Obama knows that he, Barack, is the Nick Clegg of American politics. Mr Clegg, keen to show himself a tough little nipper, addressed the other two as 'Gordon Brown' and 'David Cameron' rather than simply settling for Christian names. This started to sound forced. Cleggy also kept using his hands again. When he said the word 'big' he waved his hands in the air and bulged his eyes. Very Jackanory.

In its desperation to cling on to power, Labour’s abuse of office has become outrageous. Gordon Brown’s Government increasingly resembles one of those discredited and corrupt regimes of the former Eastern bloc: aggressively partisan, contemptuous of democracy and blind to any distinction between the interests of the party and those of the nation.

A key hallmark of totalitarian Communist rule was its obsession with trying to indoctrinate the public through political propaganda. Until recently, the idea that such an approach might be adopted in Britain would have seemed laughable. But all that has changed under Labour. The years of Blair and Brown have been dominated by spin. The machine of the state is now devoted to the imposition of socialist ideology.

The airwaves and billboards are filled with Left-wing propaganda dressed up as public information or as “awareness-raising” programmes....... CONTINUE
